How to find out which Squarespace template a site is using in 2024
Template Finder works for sites built using Squarespace 6.0 to 7.1
The Template finder is a handy filterable Squarespace Template ID reference table that makes it easy to figure out which Squarespace theme a site is using and lets you create your own Squarespace website using that theme.
From Squarespace 6.0, through 6.5 to 7.0 Squarespace offered a number of site templates that provided multiple starting points for new site owners.
Template IDs for 6.0 - 7.1 sites can be looked up using my Template Finder
If the Template Finder draws a blank there are three possibilities.
It’s possible the site was built using Squarespace version 5, which is still running and didn’t have templates
The site could have been built in Squarespace 6.0 - 7.0 using Developer Mode
Sites built in Squarespace 6.0 - 7.0 using Developer Mode
Turning on Developer Mode for a v6-v7 Squarespace website created an isolated set of template files that could be used by developers to create new templates, sometimes with custom collections. Developer Mode sites were given unique template IDs because the link with the originally selected template had been broken.
Developer Mode was phased out with the arrival of Squarespace 7.1
Squarespace sites built using Squarespace 7.1
With the release of version 7.1 in early 2020 Squarespace no longer uses multiple templates. Instead a single template is used that can be styled in may different ways to replicate the look and feel of the previous template families.
By adopting a single template strategy Squarespace solved one of the key problems of the previous multi-template approach. Even though Squarespace 6.0 to 7.0 templates were built on the same platform they didn’t all support the same functionality. This meant that site owners would often choose a template and start building, only to realise that a feature they wanted was only available in a different family. BUT.. it wasn’t always easy to switch to a different template family because certain collections from the current template weren’t supported in the new template.
Need help replicating an older site template?
There are a few options for replicating older templates.
In many cases, older style templates can be designed using Squarespace 7.1. This would be our recommended approach.
However, if you absolutely need to build a site using Squarespace 6.0 - 7.0 and/or you need Developer Mode then you can select a template from my Template Finder.
